But I didnât always live this way.Â
Why I Do This Work
I spent most of my life stressed from about middle school on. Once I realized I could get straight Aâs, nothing else felt good enough. If there was an honors version of a class, I wanted in. If I could compete and do better, I would. First chair oboe player, varsity tennis player as a sophomore, drum major in the band for 3 years (yes I was a band geek). In college, it was all about grad school, and then during grad school, I started working full-time for NASA.
So now Iâve got a full-time job, Iâm teaching part-time, Iâm taking classes, and Iâm working on my dissertation. There was always so much to be stressed out about.
I kept telling myself, âItâll get better once IâŚâ
Get into grad school
Land the job
Finish my PhD

But the line kept moving - wedding planning, buying a house, starting a business.
And then I had a moment. I am sitting in my home office. My husband comes to the door.
âHey Laura, Jake and Mary invited us to go to the movies tonight, wanna go?â
âI donât have time right nowâ I tell him.
âLaura â you never have timeâ
âI know babe, but itâs only going to be like this untilâŚ.â
And I realize I had no truthful end to that sentence.
UntilâŚ. What, until I leave NASA? That didnât feel true. Once I left NASA, Iâd be throwing myself hard into the business to make sure it can replace my income and I can prove to myself that I can make it on my own.
Until I hit a certain amount of revenue? Yeah right, Iâll magically decide, ok thatâs enough.
And then I realize⌠âItâs only going to be like this until I decide I want it to be different.â
I realized I would never hit a certain milestone of âsuccessâ in my business and then that would be the magic wand to tell me that I donât have to be so stressed.
It was a culminating moment when I realized that I was the only one who could truly do something to change anything about my level of stress. It was a strangely moving moment that was combined with sadness but also excitement and empowerment.
It became the catalyst for me to make real changes in my life that are still a part of my journey today.
The things that I learned and put into practice in my life had me going from feeling stressed, overwhelmed, constantly overworked, feeling behind, and never enough to feeling
confident, empowered, more relaxed, more of the time, proud of my progress, and confident in my choices.
And, I, personally, went from working a 9-5 to running my own 7-figure business â which Iâve been running for 12 years now. The statistics on this â the number of businesses that stay in business for over 10 years is 30%. And - people who take their business past a million in annual revenue is less than 9% - some stats say for female founders â itâs only 2%. I think that number is increasing â woohoo! And, itâs a very small number.
But I donât tell you this to tell you that Iâm amazing. Whatâs amazing is what youâll learn in this workshop.
